Movie Script

When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a movie director. It was a real shame when I grew up and realized that I had no sense of visual style. It simply wasn't something that I could do. I didn't understand pacing, timing, or any of that. What I could do, however, was write. I was one of the best writers in my class, And I took several writing classes in college. I never considered making it a career, however. It just seemed like too difficult of a goal. Then one day, I was sitting around reading the V for Vendetta film script when inspiration struck. V had been one of my favorite movies, and I wanted to see what the script looked like. When I read the movie script, I was extremely surprised. I realized that it was something that I could do. I could write movie scripts! I could be a movie writer!

Unfortunately, wanting to write a movie script and actually selling one to Hollywood are two different things. After several attempts, I realized that I didn't have the ability to finish my movie script. I had some good ideas, but I didn't know how to do it. I got some movie script software which promised to give me ideas and show me how to format. It did the latter, but not the former. All of the built-in movie structuring conventions were too cliché, and they were very uninspiring to me. Finally, I decided that enough was enough. I knew that I needed to go back to school. I knew that my future lay in film school.

 Bit of History
It struck me that the movies had spent more than half a century saying, “They lived happily ever after” and the following quarter-century warning that they’ll be lucky to make it through the weekend. Possibly now we are now entering a third era in which the movies will be sounding a note of cautious optimism: You know it just might work.
—Nora Ephron (b. 1941)

Getting into a pretty decent film program was easier than I had thought. My writing talent served me well, and soon I was in the film writers program. Although I wanted to focus on writing a movie script, I knew that I would receive training in all sorts of areas in that program. I would be taught about writing, directing, producing – all of it. I figure that it was the best way to go, because it would give me a more well-rounded appreciation of what went into movies. Knowing all the phases of production would make me a better movie script writer. Since I started the program, I have completed my first successful movie script. Although I haven't successfully sold it yet, I'm quite hopeful that I will eventually succeed.
