Using Video with Your Podcast

All you really need is an iPod, a digital video camera, and a computer. These are the basic tools for video Podcasting. Of course, you actually have to know what you are doing in order to accomplish this. If you think making the actual video sounds easy enough, that is great. It is the content and choosing an audience that is the hard part. Anyone can make a video Podcast. Not everyone knows how to make a good one that people will want to see. The good part is that once you have made a good video Podcast that people have enjoyed and signed up for, anything new that you do will automatically be downloaded into their machines. This makes exposure easy and the people who subscribe will not have to constantly look for and download your MP3s as they come out. If you already know what market you are interested in and it is a hot one, video Podcasting is a great way to get yourself seen. It will be extremely easy for people to be able to download your video Podcast (also called vlogs, vidcasts, and/or vodcasts). All people have to do is look in iTunes Music Store under video Podcasts, and there you will be. Now they can watch you anytime using their iPods.
When you are preparing your footage for your video Podcast, you will use any of the digital files on your computer to create the video. You will want make sure that your video will look awesome on the smaller screen of the iPod. There are some key things to keep in mind when filming your video Podcast. You will want to think small and precise. Get in close when you are shooting your film. You will also want to avoid wide shots and lots of tiny detail. Remember the iPod screen is only about two and a half inches. Tiny detail will not be seen and will be lost. It is not worth the time and bother. Spend most of your video on close ups. Never shoot in wide mode (16:9) this will only make the image come back with black boarders all the way around it. This will result in an even smaller image for the iPod. Shoot your video Podcast in the standard mode (4:3). If you want to have a title for your video that can actually be seen you may want to consider investing in GeeThree's Slick Transitions and Effects Volume 3. This is a plug in that costs about $50 and provides a much better range in size options than iMovie. iMovie's titling options are way too small to be seen even at their highest sizing option.

Keep you video Podcast short and sweet. Most people do not have the time or battery life to watch a three-hour Podcast on their iPod. The most successful video Podcasts last about 5 to 10 minutes each. This will save on download time for the people who want to see what you have, as well as the bandwidth you pay for. Even on an iPod a simple seven-minute movie can use up to 40 MB of bandwidth. Make that before you post your video Podcast online that you have it optimized for the iPod's screen. You can easily do this using iMovie HD. You will want to be familiar with how iMovie works and what it does so you know how to export your video Podcast with ease. The new versions of iMovie will automatically compress the file and resize it to fit the iPod screen. Older versions you will have to go into the Size menu and custom size it to 320 and 240 in the width and height locations. Once you are done then you can go ahead and click on "save" and iPod will export the video in an iPod-compatible translation.
Once the file has been converted you can now go in and add some description to make finding your video Podcast easier. You can even add in some simple cover art. Make sure the pixel size is only 150 by 150. Now you are ready to upload to the Web server. You would do this depending on your own specific Web host. If you do not have a Web hosting company you can pay a small fee to have a company host your video Podcast files for you.
